Work Talk? Play the Part!

Play the Part

Talk about work at home, or not? That is today’s question for me.

Let me don an executive coach’s hat for a moment.

In our intimate, trusted relationships, we carry our work problems home to partners, parents, or even our dearest friends. It is fair to say that work is a pivotal part of our lives.

Surely share, but in right proportion. This is especially true when you have discerning, generous people around you who can broaden your horizon. But it should never hit like an avalanche. Everything in moderation. Even those who love you most cannot absorb large doses of complaint or dependence. The more you tint your shared time with problems, the more it becomes tainted. They may even start to resent internally. They might bring it up later. That is a common reality.

Adjust a little. Sometimes you will want to create an intentional space for good times with your partner. You try to hang out, but they are absorbed in football or politics you find tedious, and the time simply fizzles out. Honestly, this happens more often than you think. It is okay!

Find the next best thing. Both of you can find something you genuinely enjoy together, and a little serendipity often helps. Executive function that includes flexibility, forward planning, attention, and problem-solving comes together! Build your traditions.

Play the part. Remember this always to be in the role of that person you need to fulfil. It brings a sense of liberation from work stress or any stress for that matter. You have every right to savor that time and space with your loved ones. Quality matters far more than quantity. Give yourself a respite from tough conversations that spiral down the rabbit hole. You deserve more.

All will be well.
